In September we start whaling. In the morning the whalers wakeup at 3:00 A.M. After they wakeup they get ready and then they leave. Then they get in the bout and then they go look for the whale. When they get the whale they tie it to the bouts and they bring the whale home and the kids get to stand on the whale then they wash it after they stand on it.Then the people cut it and bring it to the sake and they cut it to smaller pieces and they cook it and lots of people eat it. And some times the nanuqs ( polar bears) come to the whale and the people with hondas scare the nanuqs (polar bears) away some they don't eat the whale and sometimes we give the nanuqs the bone and we put it on the other side of the beach. The village comes to eat and the kids come too and make sand casles. After they are done cuting the whale we leave and the next day we have a feast and bring the meat, soup, donets, any kide of food. And they bring some of the whale to the people how caught the and we go to the person house and eat it is like a feast. Then we wait till next year.

It sounds as if you have a very interesting life. Aren't the polar bears dangerous? People where I live are afraid of wolves and coyotes. I couldn't imagine having to defend my food from polar bears. How do you decide who does the whaling?

I think it would be cool to see whales and polar bears. I would think your culture would be exciting.Do you guys gather around for a big feast whenever a person kills a polar bear or a whale?

Dear Science Teacher - The polar bears are very dangerous but we take precautions to be safe. If we don't bother them they don't bother us.
It isn't a matter of deciding who gets to go whaling but who wants to. We have 9 whaling crews; there are about 5 - 6 people in each crew. They all go out at the same time and the person who is the closest to the whale throws the harpoon. Then, all the crews help drag the whale in to shore. Dragging the whale into shore can take many hours because the whale is so large.

Dear Sissa 2010 -
Whales can range from 20 feet up to 56 feet - depending on the age of the whale. In 2004 we got a whale that was 152 years old - it was gigantic and very, very heavy!

Dear Berth Ann -
While the whale hunt is going on the women are in the Whaling Shack on the beach cooking and preparing food for all the workers. We also have a big feast at the person's house who caught the whale. At their house we eat traditional food and continue cutting and splitting the meat up to share with all the community!

What a great site! It's fun to read about your life and the life you live. You should be very proud of yourselves and this site.

I have two questions: What kind of boats do your whalers use to go hunting?

Can you get as many whales as you want to catch or is there a limit for your whalers?
